Overview

This pilgrimage in Peru begins with a unique retreat experience in the Sacred Valley, where you participate in a variety of sacred ceremonies. Besides exploring the highlights of Peru, such as the Machu Picchu, you will learn more about healing ceremonies that teach you to connect with your heart. The ceremonies are performed by shamans from the Andean community of Q’eros. Angel will accompany you during the whole journey as your spiritual guide. We designed this unique experience for travelers who would like to experience the authentic Andean culture and traditions. The first ceremony is an Andean Blessing to invoke the protection of the Mountain Gods and Mother Nature, and to offer gratitude. The next three ceremonies are a Flower Cleansing Ceremony, a Coca Leaf Reading Ceremony, and an Offering to Pachamama, the Earth Mother. Traditional shamanic ceremonies such as these have been practiced since before the time of the Inca Empire. Participating in these shamanic ceremonies with authentic Andean shamans will show you a new perspective on life and embrace your personal growth.

Today you will be picked up in Cusco and your spiritual guide Angel will give you a little briefing about the next few days. Right after your arrival, you will be brought to the lower altitudes, warmer climate and peaceful environment of the Sacred Valley. Along the way, you will visit Awanakancha, a community-driven project that introduces you to the South American camelids and traditional weaving techniques of the area. After arriving at your hotel in Pisac, you will participate in an authentic Andean Blessing Ceremony to Pachamama (Mother Earth) performed by an Andean Priest. This ceremony invokes the help and energy of the Apus (Mountains) and Pachamama for the health, wellbeing and happiness of each participant. The rest of the day you have time to relax and get used to the high altitude.

After breakfast, you will visit the shrine of the Señor (Lord) de Huanca, located close to the mountain Apu Huanca. This sacred place is considered to be the “Protector of Health” of the Andes Mountains. Then you will learn more about the three Ancestral Ceremonies. The shaman first starts with a Flower Cleansing Ceremony, which has the purpose of cleaning the negative energies from your body. The shamanic healer covers your body during the prayer. Many people say they can feel the strong energies as an after effect of this ceremony. It is quite a moving spiritual experience. The second ceremony is the Coca Leaf Reading. The coca leaf is a connection symbol of the material and spiritual world, which is why the shamanic Maestro uses the leaves to receive insights about your past, present and future. The final and most important ceremony is the Offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth). This ancestral ceremony is a moment of gratitude, thinking about everything you are grateful for and about your deep desires for yourself and your loved ones.

On this day, you will head towards the Sacred Valley and visit the salt terraces of Maras. Salt has been produced there according to an ancient system of the Inca period. Extremely saline water is led into the over 3500 salt basins which evaporate in the sun and leave salt behind. After that, you will visit the archaeological complex of Moray, which was probably an agricultural testing center of the Incas. The complex consists of numerous terrace rings that simulate different altitudes and climate zones. Later, you will experience a beautiful ceremony, the Offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth). This ancestral ceremony is a moment of gratitude, thinking about everything you are grateful for and about your deep desires for yourself and your loved ones.

Early in the morning, you will catch the train to the trailhead at Km.104 of the Ollantaytambo – Machu Picchu railroad. You will visit the nearby ruins of Chachabamba and then begin the four-hour, 8km ascent to join the classic Inca Trail at the impressive Wiñaywayna archaeological complex. This consists of an agricultural sector with numerous terraces, and beautiful religious and urban centers. On the way up, you will take in magnificent views of the Urubamba River Valley, the Choquesuysuy archaeological complex on the opposite side of the river, and a beautiful waterfall minutes away from Wiñaywayna. Leaving Wiñaywayna, an hour’s trek along a trail of flat stones on the edges of the highland jungle cliffs brings us to the ‘Intipunku’ (Sun Gate), the ceremonial gateway into Machu Picchu. You will get your first glimpse of the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu from here, the “Lost City of the Incas''. This complex is considered a jewel of the Inca architecture. It is a complete town with different quarters, squares, alleys, buildings, astronomical observatories and terraces. After a guided tour, you can explore this magical place a bit more on your own. In the afternoon, you will take the train to Poroy/Ollantaytambo and then go back to Cusco, the Inca capital of Cusco.

Reviews

I participated in many activities including Spanish Lessons, 1 day tour of Cusco, Cooking Lessons, Horseback riding, 5 day Ayahuasca retreat, Cocoa ceremony, San Pedro ceremony, Volunteering at the dog shelter, 5 day Salkantay Trek and Training with a Maestro (Shaman). It was a well planned out trip. Any issues that I had they quickly helped me. I would definitely recommend planning a trip with Travel and Healing.

30 days in Peru (Pamela)

Often times, we seek spiritual experiences to find a deeper connection with one's self and to understand different cultural approaches to healing. Travel and Healing's trifecta experience was phenomenal, and far exceeded expectations. The entire journey felt truly authentic and offered a deep understanding of Inca traditions and beliefs around using Mother Earth to live a healthy and balanced life.

Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (Cristina)

Travel and Healing took very good care of our group. We came from every corner of the world, to meet in the Sacred Valley. Ángel, Ruty, Manuel, did a great job organizing, and bringing this amazing trip, a dream come true. Peru at its best thanks to Travel and Healing. I totally recommend the team of Travel and Healing for the organization of your next trip to Peru.

To prepare your mind and spirit for this spiritual retreat, we recommend you to do any discipline familiar to you from your own faith, such as meditation, prayer, and yoga. If you do not have a specific practice, you can send your intentions and wishes instead to all creatures in the morning and at night. Getting in the right mindset can help you to embrace your spiritual connection during this sacred trek. You can have the best shamans in the universe (Christ, Buddha, Krishna,) conducting ceremonies for you, but if your heart does not want to change nothing will happen. Only you have the power to change your destiny. Your own heart is in fact the best shaman for yourself in this universe. The best attitude is one of positivity; the right attitude includes honesty, love, patience, humility, respect, courage and a strong mental and spiritual determination. Approaching with these values will result in a fruitful experience. When you pray do not ask for miracles to mysteriously occur. Instead, ask for opportunities to create miracles with your own hands.

Flying to Cusco can be tricky because delays often occur and due to the special conditions at the airport of Cusco, it is not uncommon for flights to be cancelled. Please be sure to arrive in the city of Cusco at least two days before your trip starts. The most reliable airline is LATAM because they offer you many re-booking options in case of a flight cancellation. On your last day you will come back to Cusco around 9pm, which means that you should always book your flight the next day when leaving Cusco. National or international flights are not included in this travel program. Please contact us if you wish to make customized changes.

  • A backpack with enough clothes for the whole period of the trek
  • Rain gear (jacket and trousers if available) or rain poncho (plastic ponchos optional available)
  • Strong footwear. Waterproof trekking boots recommended
  • Sandals or jogging shoes for comfort while being at the campsite
  • Warm clothes, including jacket and fleeces. Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping
  • Sleeping bag (available for rent)
  • Flashlight/headlamp and batteries
  • Camera, memory cards, and batteries (batteries are consumed more quickly under cold conditions)
  • Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain and cold
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent, minimum recommended 20% DEET – no malaria risk has been reported
  • Shampoo, contact lens solution, prescriptions, etc. that you require
  • Swimsuit and small towel (if you wish to go to the hot springs in Aguas Calientes)
  • Cash in Peruvian Soles for snacks, water, souvenirs, tips, etc.
  • Original passport (mandatory for entrance to Machu Picchu)
  • Original International Student Identity Card (in case you have applied for a student discount at Machu Picchu).

The weather is very unpredictable and changes quickly in the Andes Mountains. Even though it is almost impossible to predict the weather during your trekking adventure, we can say that the first nights will be quite cold due to the altitude and weather conditions in the high mountains. It can get down to 5 degrees Celsius, which feels even colder on windy nights. Towards the end of your Salkantay Trek, you will be in the Peruvian jungle, which means that the climate will be more tropical and warm (25 degrees Celsius).

Tipping is always appreciated and should completely be based on your satisfaction. Although tipping may not be usual to you, it is important to the people who’ll take care of you during your trip (drivers, translators, spiritual teachers, shamans, etc.).
